American Red Cross Lifeguard / Water Safety Instructor Classes


Pre-requisites:
(1) Must be 15 years of age by last day of class (cannot be hired to work as a lifeguard until age 16)
(2) Must be able to swim 300 yards/meters continuously demonstrating breath control and rhythmic breathing
(3) Must be able to tread water for 2 minutes using only legs
(4) Must complete following timed event in 1 minute, 40 seconds:
    (a) Starting in the water, swim 20 yards/meters,
    (b) Surface dive, feet-first or head-first, to a depth of 7-10 feet to retrieve a 10-pound object,
    (c) Exit the water without using a ladder or steps.

Prior to the course, candidates must download the Lifeguarding Manual from the American Red Cross Website, www.redcross.org
 
Materials:
Swimsuit (one piece for women)
Towel
Change of clothes
Snacks, drinks (no glass containers)

Upon completion, each candidate will receive the certifications for Lifeguard, First Aid, CPR for the Professional Rescuer, Automated External Defibrillator, and Prevention of Disease Transmission.
 
Class Fee:
$185 ($150 for second member of the family).  $35 is non-refundable if cancelled or candidate is unable to perform pre-requisite skills.
 
Class size limit:
First 15 students will be accepted.
